Recovery College Greenwich is an exciting recovery college situated in the heart of Woolwich, South East London. When Greenwich Clinical Commissioning Group commissioned the service in 2013, they took the innovative step of placing the college within the community. This has proved to be a successful move with 450 students currently enrolled, the college is fast developing into a mental health and wellbeing hub in the heart of the community.
The College provides educational development courses to aid and improve recovery for our students and create shared learning experiences. Courses are continuously being updated and cover all aspects of interest from ‘Writing for Wellbeing,’ to Yoga, Gardening, ‘Every Day computers’, to Bush craft and Dance!
Students are at the heart of what we do and why we do it. Development of the college is led by a steering group of people with lived experience, mental health practitioners and education providers. 80% of our tutors and peer trainers have lived experience of mental health. All of the workshops and course options are available to everyone regardless of previous experience or qualifications, and we will not ask you for a diagnosis when you join us.
Partnership working lies at the heart of the success of this college. We have established strategic partnership relationships with Oxleas, Royal Borough of Greenwich Public Health and Wellbeing, MIND, SEEC, SEED and joint working relationships with drug and alcohol advice services including LifeLine Basis, DrugLink and Blenheim CDP. Recovery College Greenwich envisages that this will not only improve what the college can offer but will also support integration across the Borough and longer-term sustainability.
Students who are currently enrolled on our courses feedback that the college enriches their lives and recovery. One Student, Corrina, said: “Coming to Recovery College Greenwich has given me a purpose. It’s great to mix with people who’ve had similar experiences.” Join Us!
The Diversion Service (the Dual Diagnosis Assertive Link Worker Post) has been resourced by a member of staff seconded from Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust for a two year period. The aim of this role is to provide motivational interviewing and to facilitate access to substance misuse services for inpatients and over the medium term to reduce admission to inpatient facilities.
Between July and December 2015 a total of 151 people had been referred. The role is showing the impact that assertive outreach work across the mental health and substance misuse pathways can have and that sustained action can make a significant difference.
